Find the Target Fonts to Add to GIMP

To add fonts to GIMP, you need to find the fonts that you like most at first. According to statistics, there are hundreds of websites offering stylish fonts for free. For instance, you can find some great fonts on DaFont.com and FontSquirrel.com. Hence, you don’t have to worry about the source of fonts.

Tip: Though you can obtain font packs from various websites, you may find that it is hard to directly install them in GIMP. Hence, you’d better download them to your PC firstly.

Download and Extract the Target Fonts

After finding the fonts to add, download them to your computer. In most cases, these fonts are contained in Zip file. Hence, you need to extract the Zip file before executing further steps. Right-click on the Zip folder and choose the Extract All option.

After that, you will be prompted to select a file location where you want to extract your font files. Then click on the Extract button to extract to the target file location.

Install the Fonts to GIMP

Once you have made the preparations for adding new fonts to GIMP, you can install fonts. Double-click on OTF (OpenType font file) in the extracted folder. Click the Install button at the top of the font window. Then the font will be installed on your computer, which indicates that any programs that utilize OTF fonts will have this font installed, even including GIMP.

Tip: Alternatively, you can also open the folder that containing downloaded fonts, and then press Ctrl + A to choose them all and right click on one of them and select Install. Then the fonts will be installed in the default Fonts folder.

When you open GIMP, the Fonts dockable dialogue will show up. If it doesn’t display, move to Windows > Dockable Dialogue > Fonts. Then you can find that the new fonts are installed on your GIMP. If you can’t see the new fonts, click on the green Rescan all fonts arrow to reload all fonts in GIMP.

Then you can check if the newly added fonts work properly in GIMP. Launch GIMP on your PC and then create or open an image. Choose the Text Tool from the Toolbox and click on the Aa icon next to Font. Then scroll up and down to find your new installed fonts.
