What is dynamic disk? Here, I explain it with citing two use forms of disk: one is "basic disk". It is used frequently, and restricted by the 26 English letters. That is to say, drive letter of basic disk must be one of the 26 letters. However, letter A and B have been used by floppy disk drive. In fact, drive letters of basic disk are letters from C to Z. Furthermore, we must create no more than four main partitions in basic disk, so it has a certain restriction to install several operating systems. The other form is "dynamic disk". It is not restricted by the 26 letters, and we can create more single physical storage area in it. Besides, the biggest advantage of dynamic disk is that it can expand its capacity to those disks which are not neighboring to it. I do not know whether users meet such a situation or not: you must install software on given partition when installing a certain software while this partition is out of space. What should we do if we meet such a problem? Many users may want to use the third-party partition magic, MiniTool Partition Wizard, to resize partition. Today, I recommend another method: upgrading your disk into dynamic disk.
Upgrade the basic disk
After learning information about dynamic disk, we begin to upgrade basic disk to dynamic disk:
1. Right click "my computer", and then select "management" in shortcut menu to open computer management interface. Next, select "computer management/storage/disk management" one by one. Then, we enter into disk management tools of the computer itself.
2. Right click the hard disk letter needed to upgrade, and then select "upgrade to dynamic disk". After finishing upgrading, we can see the following interface:
As the picture shows, Disk 2 has been upgraded to dynamic disk in disk management interface.
Attention: not all operating systems support dynamic disk. In Windows operating systems, only later editions are suitable, including Windows 2000, Windows and Windows Server 2003.
Many friends may know benefits brought by dynamic disk. However, it is not easy to manage disk. For example, when important data are stored in a computer, users can not clone dynamic disk with the computers' own disk management tool. Besides, the majority of partition magic does not support dynamic disk management. To manage dynamic disk, users must depend on MiniTool Partition Wizard which is a professional partition magic. Next, I will demonstrate how to copy volume on dynamic disk with MiniTool Partition Wizard.
Copy dynamic disk volume
First, users should download MiniTool Partition Wizard which is a free disk partition magic through visiting its official website: https://www.partitionwizard.com/. After finishing downloading, we open it:
In the main interface of the software, we can see condition of disks and partitions. At this time, we select the volume on dynamic disk, and then click "Copy Partition Wizard" button from the action panel to enter into the next step: Attention: To copy partition, there must have unallocated space which is bigger than copied space.
This is the welcome interface of copy partition in MiniTool Partition Wizard. We click "Next" directly to the next step:
After entering into the above interface, we select the volume needed to copy, and then step into the next operation:
After stepping into this interface, we need to set the space where copied partition is to be stored. then, we click "Next" to step into the next interface:
In this interface, we can adjust the location of the copied volume through dragging the whole partition strip. We can also pull triangles on both sides of the partition strip to adjust volume size. After finishing the above setting, click "Finish" to go back to the main interface:
In the main interface, we can see changes of the disk clearly. At this time, we have made a copy for the volume of dynamic disk. In the left executable column, there appears two unexecuted items. We click "Apply" to accomplish the copy for dynamic disk eventually.
Of course, MiniTool Partition Wizard has other management competence. We can learn more information about MiniTool Partition Wizard through visiting its official website.
