5900X VS 5950X

The two CPUs are designed to fit the different needs of users. There are many differences between AMD Ryzen 5900X and 5950X. Before introducing them, you can know about some similarities on 5900X VS 5950X. Both of them have identical process nodes, chipsets, and PCIe 4.0 compatibility.

Here are the differences between AMD Ryzen 5900X and 5950X.

1. Core Count: If you want to purchase one CPU from two, the core count deserves your attention. CPUs with higher core counts are more efficient at multitasking natively. The 5950X has a higher core count at 16 cores while the 5900X has 12 cores.

2. Thread Count: Like the core count, CPUs with more threads are better at multitasking natively. Do not confuse core and thread. You can consider the threads as virtual CPU cores instead of the real cores. The 5950X has a higher thread count at 32 threads while the 5900X has 24 threads.

3. Core Speed: It can be regarded as an indicator of how well a CPU is performing or how powerful it is. The higher the clock speed, the more instructions a CPU can compute per second. Core speed is measured in GHz. The core speed of 5950X is 4.5GHz, while that of 5900X is 4.2GHz.

Tip: The speed mentioned above is multi-core clock speed. The single-core clock speed is 3.4GHz for 5950X and 3.7GHz for 5900X.

4. Cache: Cache could store the copies of data from RAM locations to speed up access. It could be divided into level one cache and level two cache. The 5950X has a 1024KB L1 cache and 8MB L2 cache, while the 5900X has a 768KB L1 cache and 6MB L2 cache.

Tip: L1 cache is located closest to the CPU cores and holds the fastest access speeds. In general, the L2 cache holds a slower speed but a higher capacity than the L1. Of course, both L1 and L2 cache’s capacity varies depending on the CPU. L3 cache is the slowest, but it has the largest cache memory unit.

5. Gaming Performance: It’s hard to tell the better between the two when it comes to gaming performance. If you play some games like Far Cry New Dawn and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, you can choose the 5900X because of its better single-core performance. If you play other games like Three Kingdoms, the 5950X is better.

6. Rendering Performance: Because of its 16 cores and 32 threads, the 5950X performs better. The 5950X performs better than the 5900X while rendering in both medium and low settings (1440p and 1080p). In addition, the 5950X renders 20% faster than the 5900X when using software like Blender.

7. Power Consumption: On a standard clock, the 5950X has slightly less power consumption than the 5900X. However, when overclocked, the 5950X consumes more power than the 5900X.

Note: Overclocking requires special cooling techniques. If you use the standard cooling, it could end up damaging the processor.
