What are MBR Disk and GPT Disk

Hard disk is a kind of storage media installed in computer. In general, there are two hard disk styles: MBR disk and GPT disk. MBR which is short for Master Boot Record and GPT which is short for GUID Partitioning Table are two different disk partition tables. MBR disk only supports hard disk no larger than 2 TB and up to four primary partitions or three primary partitions plus one extend partition; GPT disk can manage hard disk larger than 2TB and supports up to 128 primary partitions in Windows Operating System. Besides, MBR disk boots from legacy BIOS, while GPT disk boots from UEFI.

MBR disk is widely used nowadays. But in the era of information explosion, more and more data will be saved in hard disk. With time goes by, the hard disk will be run out of space. Hard disks larger than 2TB emerge to satisfy your needs. So GPT disks become the trend. On the other hand, if you want to create more than four primary partitions in your hard disk, or you have to boot your hard disk from UEFI, the only thing you could do is to convert MBR disk to GPT disk.

Take Windows 7 as an example, and disk 1 is the target disk.

Is there any way which can convert MBR to GPT free in Windows 7? The answer is yes. Let’s look down.

There are three tools you can use to convert MBR disk to GPT disk in Windows 7 free, and they are disk management, diskpart command, and third party partition manager. First you should know that the first two methods will cause data loss because you have to delete all partitions in the hard disk before converting MBR to GPT. So please back up your important data at first if you want to apply the first two methods. But the third tool is designed to convert MBR to GPT without data loss in windows 7.Then it’s about how to convert MBR disk to GPT disk in Windows 7.

First, you need to back up all your important data in the target hard disk.

Second, get into the disk management interface, select the target hard disk and delete all partitions in it.

Then type “list disk”, “select disk 1”, “clean” and “convert gpt” respectively, and press “Enter” after every typing.

Unfortunately, the above two methods of converting MBR to GPT can cause data loss, which means you have to spend time on backing up your important data stored in the target disk. This process may cause a long time if the target disk contains large size data. So they are not the ideal ways.

To make things easier, technicians designed some pieces of partition management software which can convert MBR to GPT without data loss. Among all these good and bad software, MiniTool Partition Wizard is a good choice.

MiniTool Partition Wizard, a piece of professional partition management software, can be used to extend partition, move/resize partition, merge partition, migrate OS, and more. It has five editions: Free, Professional, Server, Enterprise, and Technician Editions. As for converting MBR disk to GPT disk, even the free edition can make it.
