Introduction to Private IP Address

What Is an IP Address?

An IP address is a string of numbers separated by periods or colons. It is mathematically generated and assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), a division of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

An IP address is a unique address that identifies a device on the Internet or a local network. With it, the Internet can distinguish between different computers, routers, and websites.

What Is a Private IP Address?

Every individual or business with an internet service plan will have two types of IP addresses: private IP address and public IP address. They are related to the network location. Namely, use private IP addresses inside the network and use public IP addresses outside the network.

Therefore, private IP address is also called local IP address, while public IP address is also called external IP address. In addition, private IP address is also called RFC 1918 address.

The public IP address is given to the router by the ISP (Internet Service Provider) and can be used directly to connect to the network. Then, the router will generate private IP addresses for every device connected to the Internet so that it can identify them.

On the other hand, all devices connected to the Internet via the router will be identified as the public IP address of the router by other devices on the Internet.

Private IP Ranges

An IP address can be in two forms: IPv4 and IPv6.

  • An IPv4 address is represented as four sets of decimal numbers separated by dots. Each set of numbers ranges from 0 to 255. Therefore, the full IP address range is from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255.
  • An IPv6 address is represented as eight sets of hexadecimal numbers separated by colons, 2001:0db8:86a3:08d3:1319:8a2e:0370:7344 for example.

IPv6 was designed to replace IPv4. However, for a long time, IPv4 has still dominated Internet traffic, and the use of IPv6 has grown slowly. In April 2022, the percentage of users using Google services over IPv6 exceeded 40% for the first time.

IANA has assigned several private IP address ranges. For IPv4, the private IP ranges are as follows:

  • 0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
  • 16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
  • 168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255

The IPv6 also has its private IP ranges, but these IP addresses are called unique local addresses (ULA). The ULA address usually starts with fc00::/7.
