Windows Dynamic DISK Conversion

  • There are two types of disk: basic disk and dynamic disk. Basic disk is very common and the type of PC disk is generally basic disk. With the limitation of 26 letters, the maximum number of partition of basic disk is 26, and the primary partitions can only be 4 at most. Different from basic disk, dynamic disk saves data in volumes. It has the features of unlimited volume number, high fault-tolerant performance, and it is capable of making one volume with a few disks. These are the differences between basic disk and dynamic disk:
      1. Changing the capacity of disk: dynamic disk allows changing capacity of the disk and does not need to reboot the computer or cause any data loss. But the basic disk may lose all the data if changing the partition capacity.
      2. Limitation of disk space: dynamic disk can be extended to the discrete disk space. It also allows creating volume set across the disks, merging a few disks as a large volume set. But on the basic disk it only allows creating the partition on the same disk. The largest partition capacity is the disk capacity.
      3. Number of volume set and partition: the number of volumes on the dynamic disk is not limited. But on the basic disk there can be only 4 partitions at the most and one primary partition and extended partition in DOS or Windows XP.
To sum up, dynamic disk has much more advantages than basic disk. However, most of users are still using basic disk now. If there is any need to convert between basic disk and dynamic disk, MiniTool Partition Wizard can help us to do this job easily.
