Basic dynamic disk
-
Generally, the disks in our PC are basic disks. In some cases, when the partition of basic disk can no longer satisfy us, we can convert basic disk to dynamic disk as long as the operating system supports the dynamic disk. Dynamic disk has many features that basic disk doesn't have, such as fault-tolerant, higher accessing rate and supporting spanned volume, and so on.
Differences between basic disk and dynamic disk
The concept of basic disk and dynamic disk started from Windows 2000/XP. Windows 2000/XP called the disk based on MS-DOS partitioning mode basic disk. In a sense, basic disk is the inherited disk type from Windows 2000/XP. Dynamic disk is a brand new concept for Windows 2000/XP. Its disk management mechanism has better adaptability than basic disk. The main differences between basic disk and dynamic disk are the number and performance of partition and volume. In basic disk, it only allows to create four primary partitions, or one primary partition and several extended partitions. In extended partitions, we can create multiple logical partitions of different file systems to save files. But the number of logical partition is limited. The extended partition and logical partition are inclusion relation. However, in dynamic disk, the number of volume is not limited and the volume type is various: simple volume, spanned volume, striped volume, mirrored volume, RAID 5 volume, etc. These types are independent and have their own special features. Therefore, volume is more useful for us.
Advantages of partition magic
Windows operating system provides users with a simple disk management tool. It has the function of converting basic disk to dynamic disk. After converting, partitions turn to be simple volumes by default. In dynamic disk, volume type cannot be changed, so we have to create new dynamic volume. If we want to extend volume, we can only relay on the third-party dynamic disk manager. And the built-in disk management tool does not have this function. Besides, if we want to convert dynamic disk back to basic disk, the built-in disk management tool cannot start this operation before we delete all volumes in dynamic disk. All data will lose. What we need is a perfect third-party dynamic disk manager.
Management of dynamic disk with MiniTool Partition Wizard
With one excellent dynamic disk manager, we can save much time in create volume, as well as guarantee data security while managing dynamic volume. MiniTool Partition Wizard is exactly the best choice for users to manage dynamic disk.
This screenshot is the main interface of MiniTool Partition Wizard. By clicking corresponding buttons in toolbar, we can do various operations of management. To convert dynamic disk to basic disk, right click the target disk, and then select "Convert Dynamic Disk to Basic Disk" in shortcut menu. You can visit the official website of MiniTool Partition Wizard for more information about this great dynamic disk manager: http://www.partitionwizard.com.
