Managing hard disk partition space by partitioning is the general method that the majority of Windows user adopt for disk space management, which not only helps effectively manage disk space but data management by storing different types of data onto distinct partitions to facilitate data search and avert data loss in case of partition damage. Nevertheless, as time goes on, every disk partition will have disparate utilization rate with some partitions running out of free space while some enjoying excessive free space. Therefore, user should better extend those partitions running out of free space by shrinking those possessing too much free space. Well, how to extend partition? To realize this operation, user must employ a third-party partition magic since the operating system built-in disk management tool doesn't cover such a function. Speaking of partition magic, I would like to recommend MiniTool Partition Wizard to help extend partition.
Reasons for disk partitioning
There are amply reasons for us to perform disk partitioning:
1. Excessive data on system partition would result in tardy system operating speed.
2. Damage to one partition won't affect other partitions.
3. Several partitions allow user to install multi-operating systems.
4. Proper disk partitioning improves disk utilization.
What is partition?
Partition is part of physical disk, serving as a physical separate unit and facilitating data management. Partition generally includes primary partition and extended partition. Primary is physical disk marked and used by operating system. Extended partition is partition created from disk free space, which divided into logical partition for data storage. Note: one disk can have 4 primary partitions at most (or 3 primary partitions if there is a extended partition). A new disk must be partitioned then it can be used.
How to extend partition with MiniTool Partition Wizard
First, download the partition magic MiniTool Partition Wizard at https://www.partitionwizard.com/ and then install it to computer before performing Extend Partition. User is kindly recommended not to install this partition magic to partition where operation is to be performed so as to avoid unnecessary procedures such as restarting computer.
Now launch MiniTool Partition Wizard:
Select desired partition and click "Move/Resize" at the toolbar.
Shrink partition by dragging the right-oriented arrow to the left, and then click "OK".
Now a new unallocated space has been created. Select the partition to be extended and click "Move/Resize".
Extend partition size from unallocated space by dragging the right/left-pointed arrow and then click "OK" after setting.
Last, click "Apply" to execute pending operation at the left to finish Extend Partition.
