This post will tell you what striped volume is.

Striped volume is composed by two or more hard disks. And space taken from each disk should be equal. When saving data with professional hard disk devices or disks (such as RAID card, SCSI hard disks, etc.), the system’s file access rate will be advanced and the load on CPU should also be reduced. The striped volume uses RAID 0 whose data can be distributed in multiple disks. This kind of volume can not be extended in Disk Management and cannot be mirrored.

What’s more, it is not a fault tolerance volume. If anyone of the disks in striped volume gets damaged, the whole volume will not work. When creating striped volume, users had better use the disks with same size, types and manufactures.

Performance

When using striped volume, the data can be kept in a certain order. And data can be written to all hard disks in the same speed.

Top recommendation: If you mistakenly delete your data, you can try using MiniTool Power Data Recovery to get lost data back from striped volume.

Although without the function of fault tolerance, the striped volume shows the best performance in Windows disk management strategy. Furthermore, through distributing I/O in multiple disks, it can improve the I/O’s performance.

The striped volume prompts computer performance from the following aspects:

  1. Reading and writing from large database.
  2. Collecting data from an external source with extremely high transmission rate.
  3. Loading procedures’ images, DLL or the runtime library.

Ways to Create Striped Volume

Here, I’d like to take Windows Server 2003 as an example.

Step 1: Open the “Disk Management” console. Then right-click the unallocated space and select the “New Volume”. Then the “New Volume Wizard” will emerge, we need to click “Next” to go on.

Step 2: Select “Striped” button. And click “Next” to go to the next interface.

Step 3: Add all disks where striped volume will be created and decide how space to take from every disk.

Note: Every disk should contribute the same capacity. Then, click “Next” to enter the “Assign Drive Letter Or Path” page.

Step 4: set properties like file system and volume label for this volume, check “Perform a quick format” and click “Next”.

Note: The default is to assign the next available drive letter to the new volume.

Step 5: Click “Finish” to create a new striped volume, and there is no need to restart computer.

Top recommendation: If you don’t t want to use Disk Management to create striped volume, you can try using MiniTool Partition Wizard, a professional yet simple software, to create volume.
