RAID 5

  • Data transmission rate and data security are the two most important standards of judging a server. Even one server has very high data transmission rate, but if the security of it cannot meet the requirement, it will cause terrible loss to the enterprise. On the contrary, it also affects server operating efficiency. At this time, you need the help of RAID 5. RAID 0 has a high transmission rate but RAID 1 has great data security. However, RAID 5 has integrated both advantages of RAID 0 and RAID 1. It has formed a new way of disk management that guarantees high data transmission rate and data security at the same time. Now RAID 5 has become one of the most widely-used disk management ways.

    What is RAID 5?
What is the management way of RAID 0 and RAID 1? RAID 0 employs "Data Serialization" mechanism so that data transmission rate equals array disk number multiply by the lowest data transmission rate of all disks. Once a disk breaks, all data will lose. RAID 1 employs "Mirror Mechanism" that backs up all data to guarantee data security. It has very low write-in rate and the disk usage rate is only half of the disk array. It is because of the working mechanism of RAID 0 and RAID 1, they both have certain disadvantages. That's why enterprises users favor RAID 5. RAID 5 is a storage solution that has great storage performance, high data security and low cost. It employs Disk Striping technique. RAID 5 needs at least three disks. It does not back up data but save data and the corresponding parity information to each disk of RAID 5 separately. Once a RAID 5 disk breaks, it will be recovered by the rest data and corresponding party information. We can say that RAID 5 is the compromise solution of RAID 0 and RAID 1. RAID 5 provides the system with data security guarantee but it is worse than mirrored disk. Nevertheless, it has higher disk space usage rate. The data accessing speed is close to RAID 0 but because of parity information, its write-in speed is rather slower. With "Write back cache" it can be improved a lot. Meanwhile, as multiple pieces of data are corresponding to one piece of parity information, RAID 5 has higher disk space usage rate than RAID 1 and the cost is much cheaper.

    How to manage RAID 5
Through comparison and introduction, you may have known about the advantages of RAID 5. In fact, most servers use RAID 5 to manage disks. It satisfies users in both aspects of data transmission rate and data security. No matter which kind of RAID is used, you need it to access data. Therefore, every RAID 5 user needs MiniTool Partition Wizard to manage RAID 5 disks more effectively. MiniTool Partition Wizard is a professional dynamic disk manager, which supports not only RAID 5 disk but also other types RAID disks. Let's see how MiniTool Partition Wizard creates partition in RAID 5.

In this interface, we can see Disk 2 is a RAID 5 disk made up by two 150G disks and one 200G disk. Select the unallocated space in Disk 2, and then click "Create" button in toolbar. With the prompts of MiniTool Partition Wizard, creating partition is rather easy.

Now we have created two partitions in RAID 5 disk successfully. If you want to change the sizes or positions of them, click "Move/Resize" button to resize partition or change partition position. In addition, in the "Operations" area at the left, MiniTool Partition Wizard provides you with more functions like delete partition, merge partition, copy partition, etc, which are special for RAID 5 disk management.
