Mirrored volume is dynamic volume with fault-tolerant ability. It is like a volume consisting of two identical simple volumes in two disks. When new data is written, the stored information in the two disks contained in mirrored volume are completely the same due to data backup function. If one of the dynamic disks breaks down, data in this disk is unavailable, but the system can use data in the other disk. However, when failure occurs in one disk, we should discontinue the mirrored volume and make the other disk a volume with independent drive letter. Then we can rebuild mirrored volume by taking advantage of the good dynamic disk.
Creating mirrored volume
When creating mirrored volume, we'd better use two or more disks with same size, model and manufacture. After converting basic disks to dynamic disks, we can create mirrored volume on dynamic disks.
In the window of "Management", right click any of the dynamic disks which are contained in the mirrored volume that will be created. Click "New Volume" to start creating mirrored volume.
We can select volume types. In order to create mirrored volume, select "Mirrored" and click "Next".
After adding two dynamic disks, we input the corresponding space value that the mirrored volume does not contain and click "Next".
Select drive letter for the new created mirrored volume and click "Next".
In this window, we can set volume file system and cluster size. We can also decide whether the volume will be formatted. However, "Perform a quick format" is recommended. If not, it will take a longer time to format volume once the mirrored volume is created.
In this window, the information related to the new created volume is shown. Confirm it and click "Finish". Now, we have finished creating mirrored volume.
Resize mirrored volume with dynamic disk manager
Files in mirrored volume have higher security because mirrored volume has data backup function. We can store some important files in mirrored volume. However, along with the increasing storage amount of files, mirrored volume space may be insufficient. For the sake of data security, we should use mirrored volume. Therefore, we need to resize mirrored volume. However, if applying the disk management tool built in operating system, we need to delete the current mirrored volume, which will cause data losses. Since we can resize partition without losing data by using partition magic in basic disk, can we perform this kind of operations in dynamic disk? Sure! MiniTool Partition Wizard is suggested.
