Volume partition manager

  • User knows well how many volumes a hard disk has and how many disks a volume spans? The definition of volume is comparatively complex, for example, dynamic disk can merely create simple volume. To manage those volumes properly, user should first manage disk partition well so as to optimize partition performance. Thus, a third-party partition manager is required to manage partitions, for example, MiniTool Partition Wizard, a powerful yet safe partition manager.

    What is volume?
    Dynamic disks under Windows are provided with the use of databases stored on disk. The volumes are referred to as dynamic volumes. It is possible to have 2000 dynamic volumes per dynamic disk, but the maximum recommended by Microsoft is 32.

    - Simple volume
    Include space on single disk or hardware array volume;
    Similar to basic volume of basic disk;
    Create simple volume only when merely one disk available;
    No limitation to size and quantity;
    Dilation or expansion allowed.

    - Spanned volume
    Non-fault-tolerant disk that uses free space of multiple disk partitions;
    Require storage space of at least two hard disks;
    Support 32 hard disks at most;
    Provide diverse disk space for each hard disk;
    Expand NTFS at any time;
    Unable to be mirrored.

    - Striped volume
    Require at least two hard disks;
    Support 32 hard disks at most;
    Divide data into blocks of 64k.

    - Mirrored volume
    Error-tolerant disk (RAID 1), mirror data from one disk to another;
    Offer same sized space for each disk;
    Waste disk space

    - Raid-5 volume
    Also called redundant array of independent disks;
    Require 3 hard disks at least and support 32 hard disks maximally;
    Offer error tolerance to enhance read and write performance

    Note: Mirrored volume and RAID 5 volume are not supported by Windows XP.
